TEALEAVES is pleased to offer a variety of Certified Organic teas of the highest quality and palate.
Each of our teas undergo strict independent third-party lot testing for herbicides and pesticides for each botanical ingredient. Therefore, whilst not all of our teas are Certified Organic, they are all rigorously tested to ensure that they are free from harmful chemicals and toxins.
TEALEAVES maintains a very close relationship with each of the gardens we work with and do not require them to undergo the process of becoming Certified Organic. These certifications can impose large costs on our growers and are often not affordable for smaller gardens to obtain. TEALEAVES is proud to support small-scale growers and are extremely conscious of the implications of necessitating this type of credential.
TEALEAVES only uses high-quality Natural Flavors made in Europe or Canada to blend, scent and flavor our teas and botanicals. Natural flavors are substances (liquid) that impart flavors that have been derived from a plant source. We follow the guidelines established by Health Canada's Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as to the Method of Production Claims on Food Labels.
We do not add sugars to the natural flavors.
We do not use artificial flavors or colors.
Our flavors are FDA and GRAS approved.
TEALEAVES is proud to have established incredibly strong relationships with our growers and suppliers of raw materials for over 25 years, since our company was founded. We employ a direct method of sourcing, working directly with gardens to select our teas and botanicals. We engage with the highest quality gardens to procure their best yields, building sustainable, long-term relationships and minimizing intermediary costs to gardens.
Our teas are made from a blend of leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant, botanicals, and herbs, and flavored using pure essential oils, therefore, our products are inherently gluten-free. We exceed all international food safety standards and have full lot traceability, performing extensive third-party lot testing for each botanical ingredient, which has showed no evidence of gluten in any of our products.
Furthermore, we work closely with our growers and manufacturers of raw materials to ensure that there is no gluten in the materials from which our teabags are made.
Please be aware that there is always a very small possibility of cross-contamination within the food supply chain at the garden level.
While tea and tea processing is inherently kosher/halal by nature, our teas are not certified Kosher or Halal.
Our Signature Teabags currently use a food-safe and US FDA approved nylon; this material is being switched to the compostable PLA in the near future. This teabag is made with the highest-quality whole-leaf tealeaves, ingredients and highest barrier materials to protect the delicate essential oils of the tea blend. Each teabag yields 2 full-flavor cups.
Our Classic Teabag is made with renewable and sustainable biopolymer (Polyactic Acid or PLA) derived from GMO-free sugar cane. This teabag line is available with a fully compostable (NatureFlex) outer teabag envelope. Each teabag yields a generous cup.
Our Paper Teabags are blended with whole tealeaves that have been finely-cut for a sublime infusion. Each teabag yields 1 cup.
First and foremost, we are steadfast champions of Loose Leaf Tea as the ultimate in palate, quality, lowest carbon-footprint, minimalist packaging, and highest sustainability. Loose tea has always been the choice of connoisseurs who are environmentally conscious.
As true Master Blenders, TEALEAVES practices the art of dynamic blending in the craft of each of our teas. This means that we are not concerned with matching last year’s English Breakfast, but rather, we seek to capture the best expression of terroir in a teacup.
Just like wine, the aim is not to maintain consistency over harvests, but rather to consistently re-formulate recipes. This dynamic approach to blending ensures that we are uncompromising on quality.
We are constantly innovating and fine-tuning our teas in order to produce the best flavor profile possible, as part of our ongoing mission towards creating a tea with the ultimate palate. Due to this, our teas will vary slightly in taste from batch to batch, as each has been reblended to improve upon the preceding batch.
All of our loose leaf tea tins are packed to have a consistent volume of tea. As different botanicals and raw ingredients inherently have different weights, the overall weight of the tea will vary between each varietal.
To ensure your loose leaf tea maintains the optimal level of freshness after it has been opened, please adhere to the following storage directions:
1. Keep the tea in TEALEAVES' food-safe storage tins, with the lid tightly closed.
2. Keep the tea away from direct heat and sun, best kept in a cool location.
3. Keep the tea away from spices and strong aromas in order to prevent scent absorption.
If the above guidelines are followed, your tea can stay fresh for up to one year.
Our teabags are individually wrapped in an air-tight, moisture resistant film to protect the delicate essential oils and natural ingredients and maintain the finest aroma and flavor. Due to this, the tea encased within our teabags can be stored for up to three years, with no degradation to the freshness or quality. "
In order to protect the high-quality, delicate tea leaves in transit and to ensure the intended flavor palate is preserved in the infusion, all of our teas are hand-packaged into complimentary food safe tins for maximum freshness and protection in shipping and storage.
Unfortunately, for this reason we are unable to accommodate requests to ship our tea without the tin included.
All of our tins are food safe and we encourage you to repurpose them in your home for storing other dry goods such as spices, grains, and sugars; or for arts & crafts. If you wish to discard of the tins, please recycle as per your city/states recycling guidelines.
We always recommend obtaining medical advice from a healthcare professional if you are interested in learning more about the precautions around drinking tea while pregnant or breastfeeding.
As a general rule of thumb, we would suggest enjoying teas that are both Certified Organic and caffeine free. This would also include avoiding Yerba Mate (as found in our Energy, Jetlag AM, and Yerba Mate teas), which has mateine in it, which provides a similar effect to that of caffeine.
Below are a few of our favorite teas that meet both of these criteria:
After the 2011 tragedy in Japan, we have instituted radiation testing on Japanese green teas from the 2011 harvest onwards, and if necessary, Taiwanese and Chinese teas. All of our teas are third-party tested based on stringent International EU standards as to herbicide, pesticide, mold, and salmonella. Adding radiation testing is part of our Total Quality Management and foodsafe hazard control practices.

TEALEAVES has a rigorous testing and compliance program, embedded within its SOP, monitored by our Legal Department. Within our raw ingredients (teas, flowers, fruits, spices, botanicals), we employ third-party Certificate of Analysis testing conducted by independent laboratories in the USA, Canada, European Union and to a lesser degree Asia. Within each SKU (blend, varietal), our Blenders may produce a sequence of Lots (each diligently tracked by Enterprise Resource Planning Microsoft Dynamics, which controls Full Lot Traceability and compliance with Canadian Food Inspection Agency standards).
Each Lot is additionally Quality Control tested for Palate: Color + Aroma + Taste and subjected to Standards analysis to mark and assess not only raw ingredients but also Semi-Finished Goods and Finished Goods. This process ensures that TEALEAVES makes the highest-quality teas in service to its clients (consumers, Five-Star hotels, Michelin-star restaurants) to supply its warehouses in Vancouver, Seattle, New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and London.
Our Full Lot Traceability system and Production/Blending SOPs are audited by governmental regulatory and third party certifications including, but not limited to, FoodSafe, Certified Organic, GMP, and HACCP by: Coastal Health City of Vancouver, NSF.org, BCARA, Diversey, and CFIA. On top of this extensive compliance and testing, our Legal Department audits our internal processes and record-keeping. Reviews are conducted regularly to comply, meet and exceed applicable local and international standards.
We are Subject-Matter-Experts in tea with an impeccable history of standards and quality for decades, trusted by hundreds of the most prestigious and discerning culinary and hotel establishments.
Certificate of Analysis (CofA) is a document usually issued by an inspection firm / laboratory that attests to the quality or purity of an ingredient. This document is required by TEALEAVES and often mandated by relevant government regulation in Canada or USA for import or export controls. This document typically provides exact details, in a specific sample as to the standard's quality and compliance to specifications. This document is a result of testing the specific sample (deemed 'representative') drawn from a specific Lot. The Certificate attests to the results of the analysis.
TEALEAVES uses the Certificate of Analysis as quantifiable criteria to judge whether a raw ingredient will be procured and then subsequently used in our complex blending formulations. We look to the CofA to additionally provide specificity as to: description of the test and examination, methods employed, limits of the test/testing and the actual results of the tests and/or examinations. This assessment is adjusted periodically and can vary depending on the nature, type or category of the ingredient being tested.
CofA can then be used to show CFIA (Canada), FDA (US) and other regulatory agencies that the Lot meets our high standards. As an example, in the case of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice): Section 111.70 states: 'what specifications must you establish?' and further, Section 111.70(b) states that for each ingredient or component used in the manufacture: (1) testing must establish an identity specification; (2) testing must establish component specifications that are necessary to ensure that specifications for the purity, strength and composition of the tested item are met; and (3) testing must establish limits on those types of contamination that may adulterate or may lead to adulteration of the Finished Lot. CofA demonstrates that specifications have been met as part of the larger compliance to ensure food safety and Quality Control.
We are certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant, which is a security standard for organizations that handle credit and debit card information.
