Black tea smoked with pine needles
HIGH CAFFEINEBLEND NO. 3514Lapsang Souchong or Zhengshan Xiao Zhong, literally means "small plant from Lapu mountain". The amount of smokiness from roasting can be varied to produce a very smoky version (Tarry Souchong). Smoke houses, several stories high, are used for modern production. At the bottom, pine needles burn and are carefully controlled by the Master Smoker to enunciate the key notes of the tea without having the smoke overwhelm the entire character. Lapsang Souchong is one of the first Chinese black teas to be introduced to the Western world.
This tea is amazing! My husband got interested in it since finding out about it. He doesn't like earl grey tea or orange pekoe, but he decided to give this one a shot. He's so happy about it! It's very tasty and very smoky, and it has a nice smell to it too (reminding of pine needles and smoke, which makes sense). If you love black tea but never tried Lapsang Souchong, give it a shot, it's highly likely you won't regret it. I generally purchase my tea from a small company in Toronto (Sloane Tea), and they make good quality tea, but they don't have anything similar to Lapsang Souchong, so I will be coming back for this one. Highly recommended.
