SMITHSONIAN DESIGN MUSEUM

Founded in 1897, the Cooper Hewitt is a historic design museum located in the Upper East Side belonging to 'Museum Mile' located in Manhattan, New York.

Founded by pioneers, sisters Sarah and Eleanor Hewitt, the first women to found an American museum. The Hewitt sisters envisioned and built a teaching collection that inspired students to design and was accessible to all. From the inception of Cooper Hewitt, they encouraged people to step forward and become activists for design.

Designing a Modern Museum

ON VIEW: FEBRUARY 4TH – OCTOBER 10TH 2022

Honoring the 125th anniversary of the Hewitt sisters' founding of the Cooper Hewitt collection, the founders, and their namesake exhibition — Sarah & Eleanor Hewitt: Designing a Modern Museum.

The exhibition chronicles the incredibly saturated lives and biographical story of the dynamic sisters and their contributions to the Cooper Hewitt museum collection.

The Hewitt sisters were members of high society, accomplished linguists, writers, musicians, artists, and athletes. With a love for beautiful objects and exquisite workmanship, their life work became sharing design with students and the broader community. As a part of New York City history, the exhibition is meant to live on, educate, and be accessible to the larger community.

TEALEAVES x COOPER HEWITT

We had the incredible privilege of collaborating closely with Pamela Horn, Director of Cross-Platform Publishing and Strategic Partnerships at Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, to create the graphics for the packaging label design.

The Cooper Hewitt label is inspired by the wondrous stories told about the Hewitt sisters through the objects they collected throughout their colorful lives in high society and countless escapades through Europe.

Featuring intriguing specimens of art from their diverse collection — spanning from textiles and buttons, decorative engravings, to birdcages, the label is designed to manifest an imaginative expression.

Beyond the typically stoic visual language of museums, the label design composition combines a vibrant color palette with a pattern of bold geometric shapes and prints.

The label also incorporates the custom Cooper Hewitt typeface, used widely across the museum's graphics. The typography is reversed out of a colored block for universal accessibility.
