What Does Sustainability Mean?
In honor of Earth Month we’d like to contribute to the decentralization of information and make our key green terms accessible with this index. Join us in our commitment to fostering a more sustainable future for our planet!
- Refers to the use of a resource in a maintainable format, avoiding the depletion of the natural resource and compromising it for future generations.

“Business as usual today cannot be our end goal. The circular economy framework is a tool that businesses can use to design holistic solutions that enable them to achieve long term success and resilience.”
EMMA CHOW

Define Circular Economy:
- Refers to a no-waste economy that designs waste out, built to undertake devastating global challenges such as climate change. It applies the framework that resources, products, and materials should be renewable, repurposable, reusable, to reduce environmental impact.
- Explore the circular economy and its application from our conversation with Emma Chow of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Define Compostable:
- Refers to a material's ability to disintegrate naturally back into the earth in forms of water, biomass, and carbon dioxide without any ecological harm. It is broken down through the process of bacteria or fungi.

HOME V.S INDUSTRIAL COMPOSTING
- Certain compostable products will not be able to be fully composted in a home compost system.
- Home compost is backyard compostable and uses natural elements to break down.
- Industrial compost relies on compost facilities where specific heat and moisture conditions are maintained to break down the material.
Define Biodegradable:
- Refers to the breakdown of materials in the environment.
-
- The term biodegradable can be misleading as with long periods of time all materials will break away into smaller pieces, including plastics, and can be harmful to the environment.

COMPOSTABLE V.S BIODEGRADABLE
- The term biodegradable is not a true indicator of how sustainable a product is. That is why we focus on compostable products, which decompose within a specific period of time without any trace.
- Curious how TEALEAVES is minimizing waste and environmental impact through design and packaging?
“This comes back to the idea of diversity, the power we all have, and the resilience we create for each other by allowing diversity to flourish.”

Define Biodiversity:
- Refers to the variety of living genes and species found in ecosystems including humans, animals, plants and bacteria.
BIODIVERSITY LOSS
- Biodiversity is at risk which affects food security, nutritional health, and species extinction. The loss of biodiversity is interrelated to climate change, as climate change disrupts ecosystems and destroys biodiversity, while biodiversity helps to reduce the negative effects havoced by climate change.
